Wilfred E. Stone was born on October 22, 1880 in Cranston, Rhode Island. Stone was a photographer that took pictures all around the New England area, especially in Rhode Island. Stone worked as a photographer for local news publications, including the Providence Journal-Bulletin and Providence Telegraph. Later in life, in the early 1950s, Stone was a regular contributor to a column in the Cranston Herald, "Echoes of Cranston," in which he often drew from his personal photograph collection to write colorful columns about the history of Cranston at the dawn of the 20th century. He was also a member of the Cranston Historical Society. Stoned died in 1957 at 77 years of age.
The subjects of interest in this collection include architecture, especially in Providence, whaling and boating, 20th century industry, rural and coastal Rhode Island, and some images from nearby places such as New Bedford, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.
