Description

Inscribed by Nancy Elizabeth Prophet (1890-1960). The original spelling of the family's last name is cited in other sources as "Proffitt". (Leininger-Miller, "New" 17) William H. Proffitt (1857- 1950 or 1951) is the father of Nancy E. Prophet (1890-1960). Believed to be of Narragansett tribal ancestry, he was born in 1857* in South Scituate, Rhode Island. (Leninger-Miller, "African" 35) He committed suicide in either 1950 or 1951. (Kirschenbaum, 49) *An April 23rd 1945 Providence Journal article reviewing a Providence Public Library exhibition of her work noted his age as "88" years old.
