Abstract
The fairy tale La Belle et La Bête (Beauty and the Beast) has continued to capture the public imagination since its original publication in 1740. This thesis examines the two earliest literary versions of the story, and the two Disney film adaptations, using gender and queer theory to question the stories’ role in reinforcing the gender binary and compulsory heterosexuality.
