Description

An aerial view of Newport Harbor and waterfront in Newport, Rhode Island. Long Wharf, to the right, and Goat Island, the slender island just offshore, are located on the western side of island. The shipping industry has a long history in Newport, beginning as early as the 18th century. The development along the waterfront at the center of the photograph seen here in 1985 was to become an area for a transportation and visitors center, hotels and shops, catering to the waves of tourists that visit the seaside town every year.
