Description

Two men travel a dirt path in this rural are of São Nicolau's hinterland. In this humid valley agriculture is the most productive of the archipelago but many of the farms are built into the mountain side and inaccessible to auto traffic. Once the center of the countries intellectual life, the closure of the seminary and school in 1931 left the island with an educated population and the island maintains a quiet air of dignity. Note the man clad in a suit riding a donkey.
